Hilary Duff Hints 'Lizzie McGuire' Revival Isn't Family Friendly

Celebrity Sightings in New York City - October 29, 2019

Longtime fans of Disney Channel's beloved Lizzie McGuire series were thrilled when it was announced the show would be getting a revival for the House of Mouse's new streaming platform Disney+. Not only was Hilary Duff returning to reprise her titular role, but other original members, including the actors who played Lizzie's family and her love interest Gordo, were also set to return. Shortly after production on the revival began, however, filming was halted and the show runner stepped down. The Lizzie McGuire revival has been in limbo since then.

A spokesperson for Disney addressed the behind-the-scenes drama that left production on Lizzie McGuire temporarily shut down. “Fans have a sentimental attachment to Lizzie McGuire and high expectations for a new series," the spokesperson said. "After filming two episodes, we concluded that we need to move in a different creative direction and are putting a new lens on the series.”

No other details about the situation were released to the public. Duff remained quiet about the drama, as well. On Tuesday (February 25), however, Duff took to Instagram Stories to hint that Lizzie McGuire production was stalled because Disney decided the show wasn't family-friendly enough for Disney+ platform. Duff shared a screen cap of an article about another Disney+ show that's being moved to Hulu because it was considered "not family-friendly." Duff circled the headline and wrote "sounds familiar..."

According to Harper's Bazaar, the Love, Victor series, which is a spinoff of the popular teen film Love, Simon and follows a gay teen protagonist, was slated to stream on Disney+, however, it will now air on Hulu (also owned by Disney) because it wasn't "family friendly." This reportedly also happened to Hulu series High Fidelity starring Zoë Kravitz.

It will be interesting to see how Disney handles the Lizzie McGuire revival in light of Duff's Instagram shade. The show's original run is one of the most iconic Disney Channel shows, so, it would be more difficult to switch something already strongly associated with the Disney brand over to Hulu. Duff's "sounds familiar..." comment suggest she isn't pleased with the behind-the-scenes creative shakeup for the show, as well. We'll just have to wait and see what's in store for Lizzie McGuire.
